Scouting Roundtable - Scouting Showcase - October 9th, 2014

Boy Scout Roundtable Announcement:

Mission Peak District Boy Scout Roundtable meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 7:00 at the Walnut LDS Church (810 Walnut Avenue in Fremont).

We are looking forward to offering another exciting Scouting Showcase event for 2014. Last year, we had a great turnout of Webelos Scouts who visited 12 Troops and 4 Venture Crews including the Ship Makai. All told, over 150 Scouts and Scouters attended the Scout Showcase!

The Scouting Showcase is an opportunity for troops and crews to show off their "stuff" to Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in an interactive, informative venue. First and Second year Webelos (and any Cub Scout for that matter) and their leaders and parents are invited to visit the Showcase and talk to your scouts about who you are and what you do. This is a great opportunity for Webelos recruitment. You are invited to bring materials, flyers, troop calendars, photos, visual presentations, and equipment to showcase your troop. Tables will be available in the multi-purpose room for you to set up your displays. Doors open at 6:00 to set up, with the showcase planned to start at 7:00.

Please let us know that you are coming! We ask Boy Scout Troop and Venture Crew leaders to send a reply letting us know you will attend the Showcase, and if you have any special requirements. There are a limited number of power outlets. Our recommendation is to bring a long extension cord and power strip. Please send RSVPs by 10/8/14 to Steve Rodriggs - steve.rodriggs@lmco.com. Thanks to those who have already reserved tables.

Please pass the word on to our Cub Scout packs. We'd like to have a great turnout of Cubs, Scouts, and Crew Members!

Other items:

• STEM Encampment is days away - Thanks to all who have signed up! The Encampment will be a fantastic experience! The Cub and Boy Scout Lab sessions are full and there are only a few slots left open for Venturing. However there is another opportunity to participate in the STEM activities, called STEM Exploration which is admission to the STEM in Action and STEM Live events. Please register at http://sfbac.doubleknot.com/event/stem-encampment-unit-and-individual/1424876. Due to limited overnight signups, the campout experience has been cancelled. For all those who signed up to camp, you should have received a notice about that. We still need a few more volunteers to help in the program area. If you are interested, please sign up at http://www.sfbac.org/STEM. Everything you need will be provided and there will be a makeup program volunteer training session at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Friday, 10/10 from 6:30-8:00. See you all at the Encampment.

• New HAT Backpacking Cuisine Course - There are only a few spaces left for the High Adventure Team's newest offering. Having trouble planning the menu for your high adventure trip? Ever wondered what your options were for enjoyable and tasty meals while on the trail? This is the class for you. We'll walk you through nutrition, menu planning, stoves, pots, pans, and utensils. Then give you an opportunity to prepare and taste sample trail meals. You'll come away with sample menus, techniques and fresh ideas. The course is a full day on October 18 from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm at Del Valle School, 2253 5th St. in Livermore. Sign up at: http://sfbac.doubleknot.com/event/hat-backpack-cuisine/1560472.

• Recharter Changes - There has been a new "directive" from National concerning re-charter this year. If you didn't send a unit member to the August Roundtable, you missed out on some important information. Please make sure to talk with your Unit Commissioner or District Commissioner, Gary Ely about the latest changes to the recharter process. The deadline for recharter this year is November 22nd! There is no grace period, and unit charters will be dropped if paperwork is not turned in on time.

Save the Dates: MP Spring Camporee; Scout Day; and the S.T.E.M. Encampment

Please save the following dates:

*** 2014 Mission Peak Camporee on April 25- 27

*** 2014 Scout Day Camporee, Dragon Boat Races, and Cub Scout Games on Sept. 26 - 27

*** 2014 SF Bay Area Council S.T.E.M. Encampment on Oct. 10 - 12

The theme for the Spring Camporee at Los Mochos will still be Pioneering and using Scoutcraft Skills and is being organized by Ray Cooper who is our MP District Camping Chair. Ray has a couple of exciting additions planned and will be communicating them to you shortly. Registration will be by Troop and Troops are encouraged to invite Webelos to camp with them. Sign-up information and materials will be sent out shortly.

The Fall Scout Day Camporee, Dragon Boat Races, and Cub Scout Games at Lake Elizabeth will be a week later this year. We always set the date for this activity around this time of the year when we find out when the Dragon Boat Club we have been dealing with will loan us their boats. It's still early for this event and hope you can adjust to the date charge. This is a very special event and we've been told that it is the most widely attended District event ever. Around 500 Boy Scouts and Webelos camp overnight; about 200 Boy Scouts participate in the Dragon Boat Races; and around 200 Cub Scouts and their families participate in Cub Scout Games. That's 750 to 800 people, and that's fantastic!!!! Our District Activities Chair Charlie Mabie will be heading up Scout Day this year, with assistance from Ray Cooper on camping, and others leading the Dragon Boat and Cub Scout Games activities. If you would like to volunteer to help, you can contact Charlie and Ray.

The San Francisco Bay Area Council S.T.E.M. Encampment is a new event and is Scouting's acknowledgment that everyone is interested in the S.T.E.M. Program - Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This event will offer all Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing youth the opportunity to explore and experience how fun and fascinating S.T.E.M. can be through hands-on exhibits, guest speakers, and exciting demonstrations. More information will be coming shortly, and the plan is for each participant to select one of the S.T.E.M. letters and they will follow a pre-determined program for that letter on Saturday, October 11th, designed specifically for their age level and program (Cubs, Boy Scouts, and Venturing). Boy Scouts and Webelos 2s camping with a Troop will be able to camp overnight on October 10th and 11th.  More details will follow shortly.  In the meantime, additional information can be found on the S.T.E.M. webpage at the SFBAC website. Just go to www.sfbac.org and click on the S.T.E.M. logo. Troops, Crews, and Teams will be signing up for  camping as a unit, and multiple members of units who have selected the same S.T.E.M. letter will be grouped together for the S.T.E.M activities on Saturday. The location of the S.T.E.M. Encampment will be  the Alameda County Fair Grounds.

Many of us in Mission Peak have volunteered to help plan, organize, and assist with the S.T.E.M. Encampment, and we hope you will participate in both the Scout Day and the S.T.E.M. Encampment activities. Scout Day is really just a 24 hour event (Friday afternoon - Saturday afternoon) and we hope you will support this very exciting and fun outdoor oriented District Scout Day Event. The S.T.E.M. Encampment is fun and exciting also, but intended to be more achievement oriented. Both are campouts allowing Troops and Webelos to campout out and get to know each other better.
