Shane Yorks, our newest Eagle Scout!

Shane Yorks passed his Eagle Board of Review with flying colors on Tuesday, May 1, 2007. Way to go, Shane, you're the first Screaming Eagle to attain the highest rank in Boy Scouting. Shane and his family would like to invite the entire Troop to attend his Eagle Court of Honor, Saturday, June 2, 2007, 1:00 p.m., at the VFW Hall in Niles.

Final Summer Camp Payment Due!!!

The final $245.00 installment for Summer Camp on Catalina Island is due on May 23rd.

Summer Camp Parent Orientation

Be sure to attend this Wednesday's Troop Meeting, 7:15 at Contempo. This will be particularly important for parents of Scouts who will be attending summer camp at Cherry Valley this July. Jay Hendee and David Garges will be on hand to explain the various forms and other special considerations that are required to attend this outof- council event.

Fremont Arts Festival Planning

Also this Wednesday, Ted Mutch will be on hand to discuss the Troop summer fundraiser. Once again we will staff a hamburger booth at the annual Fremont Festival of the Arts, August 4th and 5th. This was a great success last summer, but we learned some important things we need to do differently (and sooner). So, please bring your energy and ideas to the Troop meeting - even those who need the summer camp orientation can find time to stop in and contribute.

Mission Peak District Dinner

The annual District Awards dinner will be held this coming Saturday, 6-8 p.m. at the LDS Church on Walnut and Gallaudet in Fremont. Two of our adult leaders will be honored by Mission Peak for their contributions to Scouting - come out and support them! The organizers are trying something new this year, with the menu centered on beef tri-tip and potatoes. Attendees are asked to contribute a salad (names A-L) or dessert (names M-Z), appetizers to share and Scout Spirit. Tickets are available in advance or at the door for $12.50 per person, but attendees are encouraged to reserve in advance. Contact Tom Sims if you would like to attend with the Troop, or email your reservation to Chappy Lindsay at wchapmanlindsaydpm@msn.com

Canoeing the Slough - a preview

An intrepid band of Troop 110 Scouts and adults braved the waters of Elkhorn Slough near Monterey, to practice their camping and canoeing skills. Aside from a dunking or two, and an unfortunate encounter with a nearby strawberry field, everyone had a great time and the outing was without a hitch. These experienced Scouts are now prepared for the Memorial Day weekend, which will offer the Troop an opportunity to canoe and camp at Lake Sonoma over the three-day weekend. Other Scouts who are interested in this trip should speak with Bruce Chan at their earliest opportunity.

Scout Account Balances

Please review the balance of your Scout Accounts on the Troop website. For those who have joined in the last year, please review the Scout Account Memo of Understanding (MOU) as well - it is YOUR responsibility to maintain a positive balance in your son's account.

Kudos and Thanks

Thanks to Tony Acosta and the Union City Lions Club for their generous $500.00 contribution to the Troop! Thanks also to Bill Fournell for keeping this important relationship alive and well!

Notes from the Troop 110 PLC, April 4, 2007:

The PLC was called to order at 7:15. SPL Ben S. stated that tonight's meeting would be conducted according to parliamentary procedure.

March events overview: Acting SPL Eric B. reported that the Pinnacles hike went well, with designated stopping points and intermittent halts to allow people to catch up. Dinner was uneventful, and lights-out occurred at 9:30. Everyone was up at 0630 for the service project, which was completed 1.5 hours earlier than expected. Scout conduct was good, and the Quartermaster reported that all gear was returned in good condition.

Calendar for the month of April:

  • 4/9 through 4/14 is Eagle Camp, which is now closed.
  • 4/11 Troop meeting - Game night, possibly nostalgia night.
  • 4/18 Advancement meeting: Mr. Rodden will be on hand for Tenderfoot advancement, he wants older Scouts to teach first aid and other Scout skills; Mr. Sims will be on hand for Citizenship and Mr. Bowerman will be available for Family Life
  • Friday 4/27 Troop Meeting will be at Mr. Chan's and will feature the climbing wall, An obstacle course activity was proposed by Tom Shields, where patrols design obstacles. It would be better as a day activity, perhaps at a campout (Los Mochos?), and will be planned in detail later.
  • Spring Camporee is May 4-6 at Royaneh. The Patrol Leaders will be contacted to promote attendance; we have several Scouts elected to the Order of the Arrow who will be tapped out at the campfire.
  • Another shooting event was suggested for boys over 14, perhaps at Los Mochos, The targets would be towers constructed of sticks, also to be planned at a later date, and Troop 273 will be asked to participate.
  • Another Half Moon Bay campout is in the works as well.
  • Sunset Beach campout April 22-23: We will meet at Contempo at 8:30, canoe at Elkhorn Slough for the first part of the day, 2-3 hours on the water at most, and then return to camp. Be prepared for moisture.
  • We bridged one new Scout from Pack 268. Meeting adjourned at 7:50.

Notes from the Troop 110 Committee Meeting, April 4, 2007:

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Rita Haskin at 7:57.

Announcements: (See "Mark Your Calendars" for general information about upcoming Troop and District Events):

Sam H. is our newest Scout, he bridged in from Pack 268 last week. Colin K. will be the second of the year and we expect at least three more, which meets our recruitment goal for the spring.

Old Business: Bill Fournell had no update this week on the Friends of Scouting campaign; an email to the Troop was recommended as a reminder. Expect updates from the District Committee next Tuesday.

Dave Garges reported that the 2nd Cherry Valley summer camp deposit was sent in; we are sending 24 Scouts and 10 adults. The final payment of $245 per person is due at the end of May.

Jay Hendee stated that the packet of summer camp forms will be passed out at the next Troop meeting, including parent authorization forms, Class I/II medical forms, Merit Badge offerings, and day schedule. New copies of currently valid medical forms are required. Since there is an extra fee for SCUBA diving, the consent forms will not be passed out unless parents are interested.

Troop Tour Permit and Council Proof of Insurance are also required; Bruce will take care of these.

OA election results were announced, 5 boys were elected but the Scoutmaster wanted the names kept mum in order to encourage Camporee attendance.

Ted Mutch spoke about planning for the upcoming Fremont Arts festival; he wants people prepared in advance to help, and he wants older Scouts alerted in advance if they helped last year. New Business: There is some interest in a Pre Summer Camp activity in Southern California; a meeting will be scheduled to plan for this.

Treasurer's Report: We received a $500.00 donation from the Lions Club, Scout accounts are updated.

There was some discussion about the two trailers, tabled until next month.

Advancement Report: The new version of Troopmaster has been purchased to help track the membership and advancement.

Scoutmasters Report: Most of the Troop gear is now in possession of the new Troop Quartermaster, Ron Natividad. Some pieces are still are being cleaned, sorted painted. The Saturday checkup was well attended.

Eagle Camp closed, "Loose" fun Troop meeting on the 11th - see the PLC notes for activity details.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:38 p.m.

Notes from the Troop 110 PLC, May 2, 2007:

SPL Ben S. called the meeting to order at 7:15, and noted that he would again conduct the meeting according to parliamentary procedure.

Activities for May:

  • 5/9 Troop Meeting, Tom Shields obstacle course idea will be planned, patrols will devise the obstacles. Patrol Leaders will be contacted. It was suggested that a "handicapped obstacle course" would be a great idea. Screaming Eagles are meeting on the 6th and may discuss this.
  • 5/4-5/6 Spring Camporee - Adults will be emailed tonight, we need two adults in order to participate, and none present were available.
  • 5/16: Advancement Night, Scout skills and Merit Badges as previously scheduled for April.
  • 5/23: second obstacle course meeting.
  • 5/26-28 Lake Sonoma Canoe Campout; this will require a great deal of planning and careful preparation, so all Scouts attending will be unavailable for other activities that Saturday.
  • 5/26: Our traditional Memorial Day grave decoration is being replaced by a project at Niles VFW on 7/4, though Mr. Sims may still lead a group at GGNC for those who do not go to Lake Sonoma.

Andy L. and Andrew L. are newest Scouts, Together with Colin K., Sam H. and 1-2 others, this will be a new Patrol, and a Troop Guide will be assigned. Their first Patrol meeting will be conducted on the 9th by Ben S.

Congratulations to our newest Eagle Scout, Shane Yorks. His Court of Honor will be held at the Niles VFW on Saturday, June 2, at 1:00 p.m. The meeting was adjourned at 7:54.

Notes from the Troop 110 Committee Meeting, May 2, 2007:

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Rita Haskin at 7:58.

Announcements: (See "Mark Your Calendars" for general information about upcoming Troop and District Events):

Shane Yorks became Troop 110's newest Eagle Scout on 5/1/07.

Two Adults needed for Spring Camporee this weekend, 5 110 Scouts will be tapped out by the Order of the Arrow. None of the adults present were able to commit to attend.

Old Business: Bill Fournell reported on the Friends of Scouting status: $5,880 is our goal, and we are at about $3,400 so we will probably not make it.

Ted Mutch reported on Festival of the Arts: donations of food and beverages are needed, email to follow. The event is on the 4th-5th of August, and a planning meeting will be scheduled at Mutch's.

Summer Camp: Dave Garges reported that Bruce would handle Tour permit and Troop Proof of Insurance. Final checks $245 per person are due on May 23rd at the Troop meeting. Adults were reminded about the Class 2 medical form.

New Business: The Mission Peak District Dinner will be held on Saturday, May 12, at the LDS Church on Walnut and Gallaudet. At least two of our Troop adults will be honored that evening. The Troop will write one check for all attendees, those interested in going should contact Tom Sims. This year's menu will feature potatoes and Tri-tip, as well as a potluck menu.

Disposition of the Troop trailers, Bill Westcott will be asked to dispose of the older of the two, Bruce will ask the ranger at Los Mochos if he can use the better of them.

Eagle Candidate Status: Joseph M. has completed his paperwork, Shane did very well at his Board of Review on the 1st; Alan C. and David G. are finishing their write-ups; the remainder of the Screaming Eagles are all planning their projects, so 2007-08 should see a record number of Eagles take flight.

Scoutmasters Report: Those attending the Canoe camp at Sonoma will not participate in the Golden Gate National Cemetery Memorial event due to the logistics required to get things set up and packed for the trip. The campsite is a canoe trip from the staging area and Bruce wants it to be a 2-night event with no problems. A separate service project will be done on July 4th with VFW in Niles. Bill Fournell pointed out that the Fremont parade this year is in Niles, as well. Another high Sierra trip is being planned for late July; watch the Troop website for details.

Four Scouts are attending Brownsea, Adam D., James L., Martin G., and Alvin F. There is a mandatory parent meeting May 17th 6:30 at the LDS Church, 7 Hills Rd, Castro Valley, and Plan to stay for the graduation lunch at Wente, the day you pick your boys up.

Patrick Wilson's award has been approved.

Treasurer's Report: Updates have been mailed to the Webmaster; Craig is still waiting for the attendance report from the Yosemite trip.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:36 p.m.

Hilton Day, our newest Eagle Scout!

Hearty congratulations to Troop 110's newest Eagle, Hilton Jamal Day. Hilton passed his Board of Review on Thursday, January 25th. Kudos to Hilton for seeing this through - we hear that a joint Court of Honor with Chris Magno is in the planning stages.

Back After a Month Absence

Well, we're almost to the end of winter, and most of you probably noticed there was no Troop 110 newsletter for February. I have no excuse, really, just became horribly busy, but I'm taking advantage of a day off to catch up. I don't have a lot of photos this time, either - all you shutterbugs that attend Troop events, please send me a few of your best shots, and I'll make room for some of them.

Get to know your "10 Essentials"

At the March PLC there was a great deal of discussion on leadership and safety in the outdoors. Scouts are reminded to review Page 207 of their Boy Scout Handbook and reacquaint themselves with the 10 Essentials for safe hiking and camping: Pocketknife (Totin' Chit required), First Aid Kit, Extra Clothing. Rain Gear, Water Bottle (with water included), Flashlight, Trail Food, Matches/fire starters (Fireman Chit required), Sun Protection, Map/Compass. Scouts who present themselves for outings without their "10 Essentials" may be turned away and sent home, at the discretion of the Scoutmaster and SPLs.

Calling all Pack 268 Alumni

John Gillen, acting Cubmaster for Pack 268, has invited all former members and families to attend their annual Blue and Gold Banquet, to be held on Friday, March 30, at Searles Elementary. This year's dinner will have a Hawaiian theme - contact John if you have any questions.

Scout Account Balances

Please review the balance of your Scout Accounts on the Troop website. For those who have joined in the last year, please review the Scout Account Memo of Understanding (MOU) as well - it is YOUR responsibility to maintain a positive balance in your son's account.

Troop 110 takes their Scoutmaster for a Drag at the Indoor Rally

We had a great turnout for the annual Mission Peak Indoor Rally to kick off the month of February. All patrols were represented, and the leadership corps made sure everyone who attended had a chance to compete. Tim Rodden stood in as Scoutmaster, providing our Scouts with a winning opportunity, as they capped off the evening with a screaming "Scoutmaster Drag" that demonstrated great teamwork and enthusiasm.

Winter Court of Honor at Niles VFW

Troop 110 parents put together a fine feast for the Winter Court of Honor, held once again at the Niles Veterans Hall in Fremont. After a hectic beginning that included battles for parking space with another Scout Troop meeting across the street, a wellattended event came together as usual. The evening was highlighted by another fine video produced by Ron Natividad, featuring our new Troop winter event "Race for the KYBO." Note that some of these sled riders will be driving in the next few years!

Winter Camping in Yosemite Valley

Although delayed a week by the lack of snow, a small but determined band of 110 Scouts and Scouters made their way to Yosemite Valley for a winter adventure (pictures are on the web site!). The scenery was breathtaking and the weather mostly cooperative, up until the time came to leave, when the snow picked up - nevertheless our Scouts made it home safely.

Josh Short's Eagle Court of Honor

Well, it's finally happening, Joshua Short will celebrate his advancement to Eagle Scout in a Court of Honor, to be held on Saturday, March 31, 2:30 p.m., at the Niles Veterans Hall in Fremont. Come and join the celebration, all Troop members are invited.

Kudos and Thanks

Kudos to Bruce Chan, Allan C. and Glenn G. for volunteering at the 2007 Klondike Derby. Thanks to all the Troop 110 parents who cooked and assisted at the Winter Court of Honor - we couldn't do any of this without the help of all of you!

Notes from the Troop 110 Committee Meeting, March 7, 2007:

The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Rita Haskin at 7:58.

Announcements: (See "Mark Your Calendars" for general information about upcoming Troop and District Events):

Eagle Court of Honor for Josh Short evening of Sat, March 31st, at the Niles Veterans Hall.

Old Business: Summer Camp Update from David Garges: the second installments are due, $100 per person, by March 15th. He has spoken with the San Gabriel Council, which will allow the two additional youth to register; there is also room for one additional adult. There has been some discussion about going down early and spending the day at an amusement park. David will put a meeting of adults together to plan.

Friends of Scouting update: Bill will be on hand on the 14th to collect additional donations.

New Business: Fremont Festival of the Arts is scheduled for the first weekend of August (4th and 5th); Ted will organize the initial planning meeting. Changes already on the table for this summer including leasing a grill and foregoing the potato chips.

Memorial Day Flag Decoration at the Golden Gate National Cemetery is scheduled for Saturday the 26th; Tom Sims will be the ASM in charge. Bruce and Bill Westcott are currently planning a canoe camp at Lake Sonoma, departure time, place and other details to be announced, but it will follow the ceremonies at the cemetery.

OA participation on the part of Troop 110 is being reviewed, and elections will be scheduled. Bruce, Allan and Glenn attended Klondike and assisted the OA leadership, and the Scoutmasters would like to see this participation on the part of 110 increase. Candidates will be proposed by Sms.

Treasurer's Report: Reports were emailed this evening, $937 worth of checks have been written, and Bruce will provide a list of Yosemite participants so the Scout accounts can be updated. There are some accounts in arrears that need attention.

Budget committee will be convened after the calendar is planned for 07-08.

Advancement Report: Advancements were registered for the COH electronically.

Scoutmasters Report: Troop won the SM Drag at the Indoor Rally. PLC discussed the past COH and reviewed some ideas for improving planning, communication and setup. 11 Scouts attended the Yosemite campout, pictures have been posted on the website, the return trip was made as the routes were being snowed under, but everyone made in back OK.

The last two Troop campouts indicate that a session with ASMs, Troop Guides and SPLs, to review how youth leadership is supposed to work, particularly on outdoor events.

Upcoming events include Eagle camp at Royaneh during Spring Break, Troop campout and Service Project at Pinnacles, leave at 0730 on the 24th, April 22nd-23rd at Sunset Beach, Elkhorn Slough, campout and canoeing. A Memorial weekend canoe campout is planned, to follow the gravesite decoration at GG National Cemetery.

A plea was made for photos and Scout-written articles from outdoor events, for posting in the newsletter and on the website.

Ron Natividad reported on the state of the Troop tents, parts for the Apex tents are not readily available.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m.

Chris Magno, our newest Eagle Scout!

Hearty congratulations to Chris Magno, Troop 110's newest Eagle. Chris passed his Board of Review on Thursday, December 21st, just in time for Christmas. Way to go Chris, we're looking forward to your Court of Honor.

Holiday Celebration a Smashing Success!!!

Once again the plan came together, and Troop 110 enjoyed a holiday kick-off that rocked the cabana. See the following pages for some photographic evidence. Highlights included a spirited gift raffle and the ever-popular "worms (and other more disgusting things) in pudding." We welcomed several guests from Cub Packs around the area, and it was also our chance to recognize our newest Eagle Scouts, some of our older Eagle Scouts, and our own Silver Beaver, Bill Fournell.

Kudos and Thanks

Kudos to the new Troop 110 senior youth leaders, SPL Ben S. and his two able assistants Eric B. and Patrick W. We're looking forward to some great things from the three of you! Thanks to outgoing SPL Anthony S. and ASPL Allen C., for their solid 8 months of leadership, including the planning and execution of the aforementioned holiday party.

Winter Camp with Troop 273

A small but dedicated band of Scouts joined some friends from Troop 273 at Camp Marin Sierra to celebrate the end of the year in the snow. We are still waiting for pictures of the snow sled race, but we understand that the KYBO won.

Notes from the Troop 110 Committee Meeting, January 3, 2007:

Chairperson Rita Haskin called the meeting to order - thanks to Carol Barnes and David Garges for taking notes for me.

Announcements: (See "Mark Your Calendars" for general information about upcoming Troop and District Events):

Carol Barnes noted for the record the overwhelming presence of Scouts at Tuesday's funeral of President Gerald Ford, the only Eagle Scout as yet to serve in that office.

Our first Canoe Day will be held on Sunday, January 21st, an opportunity to introduce the Troop program to Mission Peak Webelos Scouts. The committee approved the expenditure of $100 for food and other refreshments. The event will start at 10:30 am.

Preparations are already underway for the Mission Peak Indoor Rally, to be held on Friday, February 9th, at the LDS church on Decoto and Fremont. All interested Scouts should plan to attend every Troop meeting at which skills are being practiced.

University of Scouting is scheduled for the last Saturday in January, and will be held at Foothill High School in Pleasanton. The schedule includes an all-day Den Chief training seminar conducted by Tom Sims and Darryl Bayuk.

The annual SFBAC Council Recognition dinner will be held at Merritt College in Oakland from 6:00-8:30 pm on Saturday, February 3rd. Honorees include our own Bill Fournell, who will receive the prestigious Silver Beaver award. Tickets are $28 per person and can be reserved using a form available at the Council website, www.sfbac.org

The PLC is considering a campout at Yosemite in February - watch the Troop website for details. The date for the Winter Court of Honor has also been set, February 23rd, with the location still to be determined, possibly the Niles VFW Hall.

Old Business: The proposed amendments to the Troop bylaws were approved unanimously after a motion from Bill Westcott, seconded by Sue Yorks.

The Troop will participate in the 2007 Centennial Quality Unit award program, which requires the Scoutmaster and the Troop Committee to set performance goals for the members. Rita will contact some of the new parents to find a volunteer to head this effort.

Tom Sims passed on an announcement that rechartering was complete and that the paperwork turned over to Council representatives. Meanwhile Bill Fournell agreed to spearhead the family Friends of Scouting campaign, with goals for the members to be set for April 2007.

Treasurer's Report: Craig reported that the total Troop account was approximately $14,300, with $9,000 in accounts for the Scouts.

Summer Camp Report: David Garges reported that there are still openings for 2007 Summer Camp at Cherry Valley on Catalina Island. A $100 non-refundable and non-transferable deposit per attendee is due soon - it was noted that Troop 273 would be attending at the same time. Further information will be available at the Winter Court of Honor.

Ron Natividad reported in as the new Troop Quartermaster.

Scoutmasters Report: As mentioned the PLC wants a Court of Honor at the end of February; Bill Fournell will see if he can negotiate a deal with the VFW post. The committee was reminded of their decision from two years ago to reduce the number of Honor Courts to three per year.

Adam D. will attend the University of Scouting Den Chief training. The Klondike Derby is scheduled for the first weekend of March, but due to overcrowding last year the Troop might elect to schedule a snow camp of our own instead.

Tim Rodden is heading up plans for a trip to Pinnacles the weekend of March 31st, to include a campout and a conservation project.

The year-end joint snow camp with Troop 273 at Marin Sierra was a success, although some repairs will be required to the snow sled after the Scouts ran it into a KYBO - George Dahdouh managed to capture it on film. Earlier in the month there was another overnight trip to Half Moon Bay, which also included a 4.7 mile hike along the beach and through tidal pools.

Bill Fournell invited everyone to attend the Council Awards Banquet to show support for the 12 SFBAC Silver Beaver recipients.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Troop Tribune - December 2006

=====================

2006 - The Year in Review

2006 was an amazing year for Troop 110. We started off taking 2nd place in the Rope Rescue at the Indoor Rally and celebrating our Winter Court of Honor at the Veterans Hall in Niles. We welcomed our newest Eagle Scouts, Andrew Wagner and Josh Short. We bridged 7 new Scouts into the Ghostly Hawks and saw them earn Honor Patrol at Wente in the summer. We cheered as 12 of our members completed the annual Bay-to-Breakers run. Our summer was brim-full, starting with the Scout-a-Rama on Treasure Island, then a High Sierra backpacking expedition and a terrific week at Wente, where our Troop took 3rd place in the Wentathlon. With mixed feelings as the year comes to an end, we say "Farewell" to Al Gallegos and his family, but not "Goodbye," as he and his boys have elected to remain registered with 110 as they start their new life in the Monterey Council. Looking forward to the New Year, with five new Eagle candidates waiting on their Boards of Review, let's all take some time to reflect on what a great Troop we have made. Through the efforts and contributions of us all, we have sustained a program that keeps 'em coming back year after year. Way to go, 110!

Kudos and Thanks

Kudos to the many Scouts and adults from Troop 110 and Pack 268, who helped make our annual Scouting for Food drive an overwhelming success. Kudos to the 22 Scouts and adults who began their Thanksgiving Day celebrations by sharing their time with the Newark League of Volunteers, and helping to deliver well over 100 meals to grateful homebound residents, and thanks to Mike Magno for keeping this wonderful Troop 110 tradition alive.

Thanks to the new Troop 110 adult leadership: to Rita Haskin, who has volunteered to chair the Troop Committee through the current School Year; to Suzie Gillen, who worked with our esteemed Popcorn Sales coordinator, Sue Yorks, to assume the role of Troop Popcorn Kernel; to Mirian Lopez, who has stepped into the role of Uniform Closet coordinator; and most of all to Ron Natividad, who after 2 years as editor of the Troop newsletter has agreed to help us as the new Troop Quartermaster and turn the editorial duties back over to his predecessor, Tom Sims. Finally, kudos and thanks to John Gillen for stepping into the roll of acting Cubmaster of Pack 268, and to their latest Assistant Cubmaster, Bruce Chan - through their efforts, along with a team of energetic adult volunteers, not unlike ourselves, they have helped keep a great Pack alive and well.

Holiday Celebration Next Wednesday

The 2006 edition of our Troop 110 Holiday Celebration will take place on Wednesday, December 20th at 6:00 P.M., with setup by the leadership patrol starting at 5:30. Food will be provided "pot luck" by the Troop 110 families - watch the website at http://www.bsatroop110.org for information on what to bring.

Events will include live music provided by some of our talented Scouts and a gift raffle for all who want to participate. Raffle participants should bring a wrapped $7 gift, and they will receive a raffle ticket in return.

Scouts and Scouters should wear their Class "A" uniforms - let's make this a memorable event to crown a memorable year!

December Camping Opportunities

Two campouts are planned for December, the first is this coming weekend, December 16-17th, at Cameron's in Half Moon Bay. Details will be announced at this week's Troop Meeting. Scouts interested in a winter camping experience are encouraged to ring out the old year at Camp Marin-Sierra. Details are still being finalized for this event, which will take place on the last weekend of 2006. Come to the Troop meeting tomorrow night for a Winter Awareness refresher course, and sign up. We will be partnering with Troop 273 for this event.

Calling All Carolers!!!!

Pack 268 is caroling this Saturday for the residents of the Almavia Senior Center in Union City, If you like to sing and want to help, email Jennifer Rasmussen Jennifer.Rasmussen@ValleyPSI.com, or stop in at the Pack Meeting on Friday, December 15th, 7:30 P.M. at Searles Elementary. Be sure to tell her you are from Troop 110!

Notes from the Troop 110 Committee Meeting, December 6, 2006:

Chairperson Tom Sims called the meeting to order at 7:50 p.m. No minutes were available from the November meeting..

Announcements: (See "Mark Your Calendars" for general information about upcoming Troop and District Events):

A second campout has been scheduled for the weekend of December 16th-17th, to be held at Cameron's in Half Moon Bay. Details and travel arrangements will be available at the general Troop meeting on the 13th.

Planning is still in the works for the Marin-Sierra winter campout on December 29th-30th. ASP Allen C. is working with the former SPL of Troop 273 to create a schedule of events.

Pack 268 will join us for the Christmas Party on the 20th. Food will be provided "pot luck" by the attendees, with details to be announced at the Troop meeting on the 13th. Ben S. and Anthony S. are planning for live music to be performed. A gift raffle will be held throughout the night, and each interested participant should bring a wrapped gift worth $7.00 to contribute to the raffle, in exchange for a ticket.

Preparations are also underway for the January Indoor Rally; this year the Scouts who want to participate will be required to attend all scheduled Troop meetings for practice, and to sign up in advance to be on the Rally team. Another good suggestion was made that Troop adults be signed on to help with instruction. Further discussion will take place at the January Patrol Leaders Committee meeting.

Old Business:

The new, improved Troop Handbook is complete and will be sent to Skip Wagner, to be posted on the website. Rechartering is mostly complete, although some adult registrations have yet to be turned in. Holiday party planning is in full swing, Troop members are reminded that this will be a Class "A" uniform event.

New Business:

Proposed amendments to the Troop 110 bylaws, which a) will emphasize the need for Scouts to be active participants in the Troop in order to advance through the ranks and b) clarify the process by which terms of service are set for the leadership patrol required some further revision and will be revisited as old business in January. New committee positions were announced, including Rita Haskin, Interim Chair, Mirian Lopez, Uniform Closet Coordinator, and Ron Natividad, Quartermaster. Tom Sims will be stepping down as chair, in order to concentrate on the newsletter and other sources of Troop information.

Bill Westcott proposed cross-registering Scouts who are 14 and interested, into the 110 Venture Crew; this would enable them to credit work on shared requirements to both programs. His idea received unanimous support, and he will come to the Winter Court of Honor to announce it. Bill Fournell asked the Troop to extend invitations to the holiday celebration to some visiting Scout commissioners from India, which was also unanimously supported.

Treasurer's Report:

Craig is still in the process of revising the accounts status for popcorn sales and the anticipated influx of checks for rechartering.

Summer Camp Report:

18 of the 36 youth slots are filled for summer camp at Cherry Valley on Catalina Island this summer. Some of the newer parents are not sure their Scouts are ready for this trip, so the Troop will probably send a second group to Royaneh the same week. Questions about the program at Cherry Valley can be directed to Dave Garges.

Fundraiser Report:

Shirley Gonzales reported that Christmas wreath sales were over, and that she still has a few items left:

1 Class Wreath @ $22.
2 Sprays @ $20.
3 Victorian Wreaths @ $25. and
1 Centerpiece @ $27. Last chance to earn a patch!

Scoutmasters Report:

During the PLC, the December meetings were planned. The general Troop meeting on the 13th will feature some Winter Awareness refresher training, and elections for SPL and ASMs will also be held. Some additional planning for the holiday party on the 20th took place, as well, with the boys deciding on a potluck dinner menu and a gift raffle.

November activities included a successful Golden Gate Bridge hike and campout, a Rim of the Bay hike completed by 11 Scouts, 9 of whom continued on to camp overnight, and 4 adults. The views were declared magnificent. The general Troop meeting on November 8th was attended by several visiting Webelos, and the annual Scouting for Food event on the 4th and 11th was also a success. We were joined by Pack 268 and collected a record number of food items. Everyone enjoyed the pizza party afterward.

November holiday events included another successful effort delivering Thanksgiving meals with the Newark League of Volunteers and a color guard of 4 Scouts at the Niles Festival of Lights, supervised by Bill Fournell.

Thanks again to Suzie Gillen and Sue Yorks for a successful popcorn sale.

All new Scouts in the Ghostly Hawks Patrol attended the Order of the Arrow's Winter Awareness training on December 9th. They will have the opportunity to practice their new skills at Camp Marin Sierra in the 29th, 30th and 31st of December. The cost to participants will be $8 per Scout plus meals and transportation, and an equal share, to be determined, of the $45 campsite fee.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Troop Tribune - November 2006
By Ron Natividad
=====================

November 4th-5th Golden Gate Bridge Backpack and Hike
Hikers and campers met at Contempo at 8 AM on Saturday morning and proceeded to the San Francisco end of the Golden gate where the hike started. 14 boys 5 adults went on the 2.5 miles Golden Gate Bridge hike. The weather was the typical San Francisco fog, which made it an easier hike as it kept us cool. The bridge hike provided amazing views and went fairly quickly. After a short rest at the rest stop on the San Rafael side 11 boys and 3 adults continued on to the Hawk camp. We went under the bridge and followed the coastal view trail. The first few miles were very challenging and we definitely felt the weight of the pack. A few of us I'm sure started questioning the amount of gear that we have on our packs. The trail gradually leveled off to gentle rolling hills and spirits and the pace picked up. Hikers were treated to songs from the Scouts lead by Allen, Alvin and Adam. Song selection was very unusual to be sure. This was the first hike I've done to the tunes of Disney movies. The two most memorable were from Disney movies "Mulan" and the one I'm sick of "High School Musical". Imagine Boys Scouts on the trail singing "I'll make a man out of you" from Mulan. There was also the incident when we spooked a horse (maybe the horse heard them singing). The horse was running the passed us when he spooked and tried to run up the hill almost throwing his rider. After we stopped and waited for the rider to calm her horse down they proceeded past us and we got on our way. The last half mile of the hike to our camp site was a steep up hill. Our legs burned and we were hot but we can see our campsite and a place to finally put down our heavy packs. We cooked dehydrated camp food and instant soup because they are light weight and easy to prepare with a mini stoves or Jet Boil. Just bring the extra water and you have an instant meal. Most agreed that the Lasagna with meat sauce was the best and the scrambled eggs were the worst. Dehydrated food does not compete with freshly cooked food but it is sure a lot lighter to carry on a long hike. The next day we packed up camp and policed the area prior to the start of our hike towards the parking lot where we were to meet our ride home. It was a short and mostly downhill hike with spectacular views of the bay and the Pacific. The water we carried was just right for a two-day hike. A few of the boys actually ran out of water and share the water of those who had extra. The last leg of the hike home was downhill and the leader group actually started running towards the parking lot. I could not think of a reason why they did this. Maybe they knew about the ice-cold root beer that Mr. Sturn brought to surprise us. It was the best root beer I ever tasted. Congratulation to all the scouts and adults who completed this 9+ mile hike. Thanks to Mr. Sturn and Mr. Gonzales for picking us up on time.

Committee Changes
Tom Sims is planning to step down as the Committee Chair in order to concentrate on getting the troop records up dated and to troop scheduled organized. He is in conversation with a successor and will be announce soon. Tom also asked me if I would like to become the troop quartermaster. This move will alleviate some of the responsibility from Bruce Chan who is doing double duty as Scoutmaster and troop Quartermaster. Tom will be taking over my duties writing the Troop Tribune since he will have access to most of the information that troop members need. I have often told him that writing the Tribune is not my strong suite and I know that he will do a much better job than I could. It has been a pleasure writing the Troop Tribune and I really enjoyed talking and working with everyone to get the news. Special thanks to those of you who sent photos, articles and provided information for me to use for the Tribune. You have made my job much easier and pleasurable.

New Hats Need a New Troop Patch Design
Do you want your art worn by every member of the troop? Do you want to create something that will be envy of the other troops. The new troop patch design will be used on the new hats that the troop will be ordering and will probably grace future shirts, neckerchiefs, jackets, letter heads and even the Troop Tribune. There will be a competition for the next design so all of you Graphic designers or artists out there show us your creativity. Remember to include all the information that is currently on our troop patch. Bruce Chan is coordinating this contest and entries will be due in early December. More information to follow.
